A New Partnership to Help Students with Mental Health Issues
:: 22 April, 2008
The mayor, the police chief and school district leaders announced a new partnership for mental health and school safety on Tuesday.
It comes less than a week after a 17-year-old student was shot and killed by an officer at Roosevelt High.
The student in that deadly shooting suffered from mental health issues. Carrizales' family says he was on medication for depression and other problems. Now, local leaders want to reach other students who need help.
Students, teachers, parents, and police agree; the death of 17-year-old Jesse Carizalles was a tragedy. The question now is, what can the school district and the city do to help students with mental health problems?
Fresno mayor Alan Autry said, "Yes, what happened at Roosevelt was a tragedy, but it will be even a greater tragedy if we let our shock, our grief and our sorrow blind us to, and refrain us from, what must be done."
The mayor, Chief Dyer and school district leaders gathered at City Hall Tuesday to announce a new partnership for school safety and students' mental health. It comes just hours after the teenager was laid to rest in a private service.
Over the weekend, family members and local activists held their own press conference lashing out at Fresno police. Ben Benavidez of the Mex-American Political Association said, "Jerry Dyer is a liar. He's a liar. He's no good."
Gloria Hernandez, criminal justice advocate said, "We want the Attorney General, we want the US Government to come in and investigate this particular case, and the FBI."
Chief Dyer stands by the actions of officer Junus Perry. Perry fired a single shot, killing Carrizles, moments after the teen attacked him with a baseball bat.
Dyer says Fresno police responded to 108 calls about students with mental health problems at schools in 2007 alone.
Valley leaders say they'll work with schools and police to reach other students before it's too late.
Mayor Autry said, "It appears with a high degree of certainty, that mental health issues drove the actions that ended a young life and caused a good man, and a good officer, to have no other choice but to take that life."
